Best Thai Food in Koh Tao
The island’s best Thai food comes from small local kitchens with limited menus and no English signs. These four places serve dishes you won’t find at tourist restaurants — at prices that’ll make you question what you’ve been paying elsewhere on the island.
Chalok House Restaurant
Our absolute favourite restaurant on Koh Tao and the place we eat at most often. Chalok House is a rustic wooden shack with a Che Guevara picture nailed to one of the pillars and a small menu that changes based on what’s fresh. The Chiang Mai noodles with home-fried potatoes are unlike anything else on the island — it’s become the dish we measure other Thai restaurants against. Most plates run 80-120 THB, which is remarkable for food this good. The seating isn’t the most comfortable and it’s close to the road, so it’s not the place for a romantic evening — but nobody comes here for the ambiance. They come back for the food. Cash only, five minutes on foot from Wonderland.
995 Roasted Duck
995 Roasted Duck in Sairee is famous across the island for one thing: roasted duck with rice for 80 THB. The service is fast — even when there’s a queue, and there usually is one. The queue is part of the experience at this point. Some people swear it’s worth the 10-30 minute wait; we’d probably grab something else if the line is long, but that says more about our patience than the food. When you get a plate of that duck, you’ll understand why it’s the most talked-about cheap meal on the island.
Tra Kul Kao’s Kitchen
This is as local as Koh Tao dining gets. Tra Kul Kao’s Kitchen in Chalok serves very local Thai dishes at honest prices — the curries and fried rice are consistently excellent. If you want to try something adventurous, order the prawns with stinky beans. The name puts people off, but the flavour is complex and unlike anything you’ll get at a tourist-facing restaurant. It’s the kind of dish that makes you feel like you’ve found the real Koh Tao food scene.
Mama tam (Mama’s)
Mama tam on Sairee’s walking street is always packed in the evening — and always cheap. The cashew nut tofu is the standout dish, but everything on the menu is solid homestyle Thai cooking. The crowds tell you everything: this is where budget-conscious travellers eat well without compromise. Get there early or expect to wait for a table.

Koh Tao’s breakfast scene has exploded in the last few years. The best spots fill up by 9am in high season, so either get there early or plan for a late brunch. Here’s where we go when we want something better than toast.
Mellow Submarine
Our go-to breakfast spot. Mellow Submarine in Chalok nails the balance between quality food and fair prices. The tea-leaf salad is something special — it’s become the thing we recommend to everyone who asks. The chicken wrap and eggs benedict are both excellent too. The vibe mixes modern café with Thai touches, and they’ve got toys and games that make it genuinely family-friendly (just watch the road — it’s right at the street). Closes at 5pm, so don’t plan dinner here. In high season, the breakfast rush is real — get there before 9 or prepare to wait.
Croissant & Ko
Croissant & Ko in Chalok is run by the same owner as French Market and shares the same kitchen quality. The eggs benedict is the morning pick; the pizzas take over for lunch and evening. It’s a modern café that draws couples and backpackers — it’s close to several big hostels in the area. French Market has a similar menu but attracts more families and an older crowd. Both are great; Croissant & Ko just has a younger energy.
Dough Koh Tao
Dough is the Chalok breakfast hotspot that everybody seems to find on their second or third day. Great food, good prices, and a local-famous reputation that keeps it packed every morning. If there’s a queue, it moves fast. Worth trying at least once — the brunch menu is solid across the board.
Coconut Monkey
Coconut Monkey at Mae Haad Beach is the beachfront breakfast that actually delivers on food quality, not just the view. Vegan-friendly with solid options across the menu. We mainly go for breakfast but they serve lunch too. If you’re arriving or leaving by ferry, it’s a short walk from the pier — a much better option than the generic restaurants right at the port.
Other strong breakfast options: NUI Bakery in Sairee has excellent bread and meat-vegetarian combo sandwiches across two locations. Café Culture Coffee is probably the best beachside breakfast in Sairee — right on the sand with a huge menu. Taoni in Chalok does an avocado toast that’s earned a following, with a French-chill coworking-friendly vibe.
Best Beachfront and Sunset Dining
Koh Tao’s beachfront restaurants range from cheap Thai with your feet in the sand to upscale beach clubs with cocktail menus. The best sunset spots are on the west coast — Sairee and Chalok both face the right direction. Here’s where to go when the view matters as much as the food.
Lotus Beach Bar & Restaurant
Our top pick for sunset dining on Koh Tao. Lotus on Sairee Beach serves some of the best food you’ll find at any beachfront spot on the island — the Khao Soi alone is worth the trip. Prices are fair for a beach location, and the fire show in the evening turns dinner into a full experience. One honest warning: there’s no sun protection on the beach seating, so arriving for sunset means the sun hits your face directly at the best viewing hour. Come at 4 or 5 and you’ll get a table easily. Planning to arrive around 6? Reserve a spot at the beach — the sunset tables fill up. Next door there’s a proper bar with a dance floor if you want to keep the night going.
IBIZA Beach Club
IBIZA Beach Club on Sairee is the special night out on Koh Tao. The garlic prawns are incredible — order bread with them and you won’t regret it. Everything else is high quality too, though we’d skip the pizza and stick with the seafood and Mediterranean dishes. The vibe is modern and a step above most places on the island — you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Spain but with island air. Pricier than average at 400-600 THB per dish, but the food quality justifies it. Good for couples, groups, and families. Reserve for sunset — it fills up.
Barracuda on the Beach
Barracuda in Chalok Bay sits right at the beach with a solid menu of Thai and Western dishes. The tuna steak is the go-to order. It’s one of our favourite spots for a relaxed beachfront dinner — not the fanciest view on the island, but genuinely nice and easy to reach from Wonderland. At 400-600 THB it lands in mid-range territory, making it a good pick for a romantic dinner without the fine-dining price tag.
Koppee Beach Club
Koppee Beach Club in Chalok isn’t the best food on the island — it’s good, not excellent. But the full package makes it worth it: beach access, a swimming pool, and proper meals in one spot. We recommend it specifically for families with kids — the pool keeps them happy while you eat in peace. Prices are fair for what you get at 200-400 THB.

Other beachfront options worth knowing: Fizz Beach Club on Sairee is a women-led business with good prices and a family-friendly atmosphere. Sandbar Restaurant on Sairee is nice with good food, though whether it’s worth the premium depends on your budget.
Best Budget Eats Under 200 THB
You can eat well on Koh Tao for under 200 THB per meal — and we’re not talking about 7-Eleven sandwiches. These places serve real food at prices that stretch a backpacker budget for weeks. Most of the best restaurants in Koh Tao for budget travellers are the same places locals eat at daily.
Yang’s Thai Food
Yang’s Thai Food in Mae Haad is our number one budget recommendation. The portions are enormous, the prices are incredibly low, and the food is genuinely good — not just good-for-the-price. If you’re watching your spending, this is the restaurant that’ll keep you fed and happy. It’s the place we send guests when they ask for the best value meal on the island.
Da’s Sandwiches
Da’s Sandwiches near Mae Haad Pier makes some of the best sandwiches on the island for under 200 THB. The fried chicken with cheese is the one — order it and you’ll be back. It’s mainly grab-and-go with two tables. If you’re the only one ordering, expect about 10 minutes. If there’s a queue, it can stretch to 20-30 minutes — Da takes her time and everything is made fresh. Worth a special trip if you’re craving a proper sandwich, and essential if you’re near the pier before or after a ferry.
Sandwich Lady
Sandwich Lady in Chalok does exactly what the name promises — great sandwiches at great prices. Everything on the menu is solid and cheap, with most items well under 200 THB. A few tables available but most people take away. About 15 minutes from order to sandwich. Good for breakfast or lunch.
Bingo Rev.2
Bingo Rev.2 in Sairee is a budget traveller’s best friend — huge portions of genuinely good food at prices that feel like a mistake. The kind of place where you order, eat until you’re full, and the bill still surprises you. If you’re spending more than a few days on the island, this is a rotation regular.

Best Western and International Food
After a few days of pad thai and green curry, most people start craving something different. Some of the best restaurants in Koh Tao aren’t Thai at all — the island has surprisingly good Indian, Middle Eastern, and burger spots. These places aren’t tourist traps serving bad Western food; they’re genuinely excellent at what they do.
Steak Tao Restaurant
Steak Tao in Mae Haad is the restaurant we send guests to when they can’t decide what they want. The menu is enormous — Thai and Western — and everything is good. The burgers deserve special mention: you get a full steak patty in the bun, which is unusual and tastes great. Thai dishes start around 200 THB; Western runs higher. The décor is nice but it’s close to the main road, so expect some noise. Five minutes on foot from Wonderland, making it an easy default when nothing else comes to mind.
High On Chai
High On Chai in Sairee serves the best Indian food on Koh Tao — and honestly, probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Thailand. The chicken masala is the pick for meat eaters; palak paneer for vegetarians. Order a salty lassi with it. The prices are fair for the quality, the vibe is modern, and they deliver — including to Wonderland. If you’re craving Indian food, don’t go anywhere else.
Hippo Burger
Hippo Burger in Sairee is a proper burger restaurant — not a bar that also does burgers. The beef burgers are excellent, the fried chicken is great, and the veggie burger is one of the few vegetarian options on the island that actually satisfies. They deliver to Wonderland too, which makes it our go-to when we want something fast and good without leaving the hostel.
MILK & HONEY
MILK & HONEY in Chalok is the island’s Middle Eastern spot — and the hummus alone is worth the visit. The pita chicken is our usual order. If you’ve been on a Thai food run for a week and want something completely different, this hits the reset button. Good prices for the quality at 200-400 THB.
More international options: Pizza Arte in Chalok does good pizza and pasta, five minutes from Wonderland. French Market and Croissant & Ko share an owner and serve French-style food with pizza. La Pizzeria da Claudio in Sairee ties with French Market for the best pizza on the island, though the prices are higher. Harmony Koh Tao
Harmony in Mae Haad is the only true fine dining restaurant on Koh Tao. Everything on the menu is excellent — the quality matches the 1,000+ THB per person price point. The menu is focused rather than huge, with enough range for most tastes, though options are limited for vegans and vegetarians. You don’t need fancy clothes (this is Koh Tao), but you do need to wear a shirt — it’s not the kind of place you walk into after a beach day in just a bikini top. Worth it for a birthday, anniversary, or any night you want to feel like you’re somewhere special. They usually have space, but it doesn’t hurt to check.
The Cape Restaurant — Monthly BBQ
The Cape in Chalok runs a monthly BBQ that’s the best barbecue event on the island. At 950 THB per person it’s a splurge, but the quality is remarkable — go with a big appetite. The restaurant itself has a pool and its own small beach, which makes the whole experience feel like an event rather than just dinner. The catch: you need a scooter to get there. The regular menu is solid too, but the monthly BBQ is the reason to plan a visit.
For other special-occasion options: IBIZA Beach Club at 400-600 THB is the mid-budget splurge with garlic prawns and sunset views (covered in the beachfront section above). 1/1 Bar & Restaurant on Sairee Beach does high-end beachfront dining at 1,000+ THB with a younger, more energetic vibe.
Best Restaurants Near Wonderland
One of the best things about staying in Chalok is the food within walking distance. You don’t need a scooter to eat well — several of the best restaurants in Koh Tao are five minutes or less from our front door, and a dozen more deliver straight to the hostel.
Babaloo Restaurant — Next Door
Babaloo is literally next door to Wonderland — we keep their menus at reception and when we have time, we help guests order. The massaman curry with vegan duck is the signature dish and something you genuinely can’t get anywhere else on the island. The full vegan and vegetarian menu is excellent, but they do great meat dishes too. At under 200 THB for most plates, it’s one of the best value meals you’ll find. This is the restaurant that guests mention most when they talk about food near the hostel.
Within a five-minute walk you also have Chalok House (our favourite Thai — covered above), Pizza Arte for good pizza and pasta, and Steak Tao for when you can’t decide (covered above). For breakfast, Mellow Submarine and Dough are both in Chalok.

💎 The Som Tam Lady (Mama): Not on Google Maps. A tiny restaurant next to Bam Bam in Mae Haad, run by one Thai lady. We call her the Som Tam Lady because she makes the best som tam (green papaya salad) on the island. No website, no reviews — just ask around or look for the small place next to Bam Bam. This is the closest thing to a genuine local secret Koh Tao has.
Dining Tips for Koh Tao
A few practical things that’ll save you time and money eating on Koh Tao — the stuff that takes most visitors a few days to figure out on their own.
- Cash is still king. Many of the best small restaurants are cash-only — Chalok House, most street food vendors, and several budget spots. ATMs at Mae Haad and Sairee charge 220 THB per withdrawal, so take out enough for a few days.
- Ordering “mai pet” works. If you can’t handle heat, say “mai pet” (not spicy) when ordering. Most Thai places will adjust without judgment.
- Avoid peak hours at popular spots. 995 Roasted Duck queues build from 6pm. Mellow Submarine fills up by 9am in high season. Mama tam is packed every evening. Either arrive early or have a backup plan.
- Delivery is phone or Line, not apps. Koh Tao doesn’t have GrabFood or food delivery apps. Most restaurants deliver via a phone call or Line message. Ask at Wonderland reception — we have menus and can help you order.
- A scooter unlocks the food scene. The best restaurants in Koh Tao are spread across three areas. Walking works within each village, but getting between Chalok, Mae Haad, and Sairee means a scooter ride. Rentals run 200-300 THB per day.
