Looking for the best beaches in Koh Tao? We have over 20 beaches — and most visitors never find the good ones. The busy spots near town are fine, but the island’s best swimming, snorkelling, and scenery are tucked away on quieter bays that take a little effort to reach. This guide cuts through the noise — part of our complete Koh Tao guide — nine beaches worth your time, what makes each one worth the trip, and exactly what to expect when you get there.
Ao Leuk is the best all-round beach on Koh Tao — calm water, soft sand, and reliable snorkelling accessible from shore. For turtles, head to Shark Bay. For the beach closest to Wonderland with great sunset views, Chalok Beach is a five-minute walk away.
Table of Contents

1. Ao Leuk — Best All-Round Beach
Ao Leuk is the best beach on Koh Tao for doing a bit of everything — swimming, snorkelling, sunbathing, and spotting baby blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. The centre of the bay is pure sand stretching about a kilometre out, so you can walk into deep water without stepping on coral. Reef sharks patrol the sandy shallows at around 2 metres depth, and on a calm day you can spot them from the shore.

The coral sits on both sides of the beach — the right side has the better reef. Blue-spotted rays hide under the rock ledges there, and on a good day you might see a turtle feeding further out. The sandy middle is a favourite training ground for dive schools running drills, so don’t be surprised if you see groups of beginners practising underwater.
The sharks are small and completely harmless. Their teeth couldn’t break skin if they tried. They’ll scatter the moment a crowd gathers — which happens fast once someone spots one. If you want them to yourself, go early before the day-trippers arrive.

About 15 minutes by scooter from Wonderland — same road as Tanote Bay, but take the fork halfway. When the road splits, go left for free entry to a Thai restaurant with beach access. Go right and you’ll pay 100 THB at the gate. Same beach, same water.
Entry: Free (left fork) or 100 THB (right fork)
Getting there: 15 min by scooter from Wonderland — same road as Tanote Bay, fork left
Best time: Early morning before day-trippers arrive — reef sharks scatter once crowds gather
Watch out for: Gets packed midday. Occasional storm debris after bad weather, but rare.
2. Tanote Bay — Best for Snorkelling & Cliff Jumping
Tanote Bay has the best snorkelling variety on Koh Tao, plus the island’s most famous cliff jump. The coral starts within a few steps of the shore — you’ll see fish before the water reaches your waist. We’ve spotted yellow box fish here, and if you swim to the right side past the jumping rock, there are underwater stone monuments at 8–10 metres that make a great freediving target.

The cliff jumping rock is about 6 metres high. The climb up is rope-and-bare-hands, and once you commit, going back down is harder than jumping — so only start if you’re ready to finish. Always check the water depth before you jump — it changes with the tide.
For a full guide to cliff jumping spots and safety tips across the island, see our Koh Tao Cliff Jumping guide.
About 20 minutes by scooter from Wonderland. The road goes through some hills — don’t try walking this one. Park at the second entrance near Diamond Bar, it’s the closest to the beach. Poseidon Restaurant (marked “Poseidon Resort” on Google Maps) does solid Thai food and the shakes are worth trying.
Entry: Free
Getting there: 20 min by scooter from Wonderland — hilly road, scooter recommended
Best time: Around 1pm — still warm but the east-facing bay gets afternoon shade
Watch out for: Shallow coral near shore — watch your step. Gets packed midday because of the rock.
3. Shark Bay — Best for Turtle Spotting
Despite the name, Shark Bay is about turtles — not sharks. Spotting a blacktip here is almost impossible. What Shark Bay actually delivers is some of the best turtle encounters on Koh Tao. Green sea turtles the size of a small human feed on the dead coral that covers the bay floor, and they’re slow enough to swim alongside if you keep a respectful distance.

The main access goes through Haad Tien Beach Resort, which currently charges 500 THB. A free path exists (search “Free Beach to Shark Bay” on Google Maps), but resort staff increasingly come down and ask for payment on that side too. Budget for the fee or consider Ao Leuk as a free alternative with comparable snorkelling.
Turtles are easier to find when you swim out to where the floor drops to about 5–6 metres. If you’re struggling to spot them yourself, here’s a trick: Oxygen Tours runs a snorkel trip around 5pm and they find turtles fast. We sell Oxygen tickets at our reception too. Watch from the beach — if you see a cluster of snorkellers suddenly grouping up in one spot, swim over. That’s your turtle.
For the full breakdown on the best times and exactly where to swim, see our complete Shark Bay guide.
Entry: 500 THB (Haad Tien Beach Resort) — free path increasingly restricted
Getting there: 15 min by scooter from Wonderland, 50 min walk
Best time: Mid-morning for calm clear water; 5pm if booking Oxygen Tours — they find turtles fast
Watch out for: Very shallow at low tide. Most coral is dead — come for turtles, not reefs.
4. Sairee Beach — Best for Sunsets & Nightlife
Sairee is Koh Tao’s largest beach and the best spot on the island for sunsets. The strip is lined with bars, restaurants, and fire shows most evenings. It’s not a swimming beach — the water is shallow enough that corals sometimes surface — but for atmosphere and food, nothing else comes close.

The beach runs long enough that it has its own walking street running parallel, packed with shops and restaurants. In the mornings it’s a completely different place — quiet, great for a beachside breakfast. At night the bars take over with music and the sand is easier to walk on with fewer crowds. Longtail boats line the shore during the day, and dive boats cluster offshore — it’s a working beach as much as a social one.
For more on the bar scene and where to go after dark, check out our Koh Tao Nightlife guide.
Entry: Free
Getting there: ~15 min by scooter from Wonderland — many entrances along the beach
Best time: 5:30–6pm for sunset. Mornings for quiet breakfast on the sand.
Watch out for: Very shallow water — not great for swimming. Gets crowded at sunset with sports, walkers, and fire show crowds.
“The area in which the hostel is located is one of the best on the island in terms of being chill and laidback while still close to wonderful beaches.”
— Tom, Google Reviews
5. Chalok Beach — Wonderland’s Local Beach
Chalok Baan Kao is Wonderland’s backyard — five minutes on foot, no scooter needed. It’s a south-facing bay with calm, clear water and one of the best sunset views on Koh Tao. Where Sairee is busy and social, Chalok moves at a different pace: a village beach with more locals eating dinner here on a weeknight than tourists.

The bay faces south and is well-protected from northern swell, so the water stays calm even when other beaches are choppy. It’s a good swimming beach — wide, sandy, with a gradual drop-off. The coral is patchy rather than spectacular, but there’s enough reef life in the shallower sections to justify bringing snorkel gear. Paddleboards and kayaks work the bay most afternoons.
A handful of restaurants sit right on the waterfront and stay open into the evening. Get there before sunset, grab a table facing the water, and stay put. The sky over the hills goes orange in a way that’s worth sitting still for. After that, it’s five minutes back to Wonderland.
Entry: Free
Getting there: 5 min walk from Wonderland — follow the main road south toward the bay
Best time: Late afternoon into sunset — south-facing, so the light is best from 5pm
Watch out for: Patchy coral in the shallower sections near the edges — watch your feet.
6. Freedom Beach — Best Value (3 Beaches for 50 THB)
Freedom Beach is the best deal on Koh Tao — 50 THB gets you access to three spots: Freedom Beach itself, Taa Toh Lagoon Beach next door, and the John Suwan Rock Viewpoint above them both. You can walk between all three on a concrete pathway along the rocks. The viewpoint alone is worth it — Shark Bay on one side, Chalok Bay on the other, and most of the island spread below you.

Freedom Beach has soft sand, tree shade, and beach chairs — good for a relaxed morning. The coral starts shallow, which makes entering the water tricky, but swim further out and the depth opens up with decent reef and a variety of fish. Taa Toh is mostly sand with a restaurant, and the walkway between them is one of the more photogenic short walks on the island.
The John Suwan viewpoint hike isn’t strenuous — nothing on Koh Tao is too steep, but you’ll feel the heat. The view from the top is one of the best on the island and worth every step.
For more viewpoints and walking routes, see our Hiking Trails in Koh Tao guide.
Entry: 50 THB — includes Freedom Beach, Taa Toh Lagoon, and John Suwan viewpoint
Getting there: 5 min by scooter from Wonderland — short drive south, easy parking
Watch out for: Coral starts very shallow — entering the water can be tricky. Better for chilling than swimming near shore.
7. June Juea — The Local Pick
June Juea is our favourite quiet beach on the south coast. Tourists do find it, but it stays quieter than the east-side bays — a genuinely local pace that other beaches lose once they get listed on Google. The sand is soft, the water turns a deep blue around midday, and the dead coral floor means turtles sometimes come to feed. We’ve seen one here ourselves.
This is a bring-your-own-snacks beach. There’s a restaurant nearby but it’s nothing special — pack food and water if you’re planning to stay a while. The sunset is beautiful from the water, and the whole vibe is closer to “locals hanging out” than “tourist attraction.” It’s at the south end of the island, reachable by scooter — the walk is tough.
Entry: Free
Getting there: Short scooter ride from Wonderland — south end of the island. Not recommended on foot.
Watch out for: Limited food options — bring snacks. Dead coral floor (reef shoes help).
Also nearby: Banana Rock & Sai Thong Beach
Two more spots close to Wonderland worth a quick mention. Banana Rock has a budget Thai restaurant right on the water — good for a cheap beachside lunch. Sai Thong Beach has a newer beach bar where you can grab a drink and enjoy the views (a drink purchase is expected if you want to hang out). Neither is a destination beach, but both are solid options when you want something close without the scooter ride.
8. Sai Nuan & Leo Beach — Best for a Full Day Out
Sai Nuan is a bit secluded, naturally beautiful, and has its own bar and restaurant — so you can show up in the morning and not leave until sunset. The snorkelling further out is worth bringing gear for, and the beach itself is a quieter alternative to the east-side bays. It’s one of those beaches that rewards you for committing to a full day rather than a quick visit.
The real bonus is the Leo Beach Music Festival, which runs weekly from the same stretch of sand. It’s one of the most popular events on Koh Tao — a proper party atmosphere with music on the beach. We sell tickets cheaper at Wonderland’s reception, and on festival nights we run a quiz night with drinks until 11pm, then everyone who wants to go heads there together.
Entry: Free (festival tickets separate — cheaper at Wonderland reception)
Getting there: ~10 min by scooter from Wonderland — accessible by foot or scooter from the west side
Best time: All day — worth committing to rather than a quick visit. Check Wonderland’s board for Leo Beach Festival dates.
Watch out for: More remote — bring essentials. Festival nights get busy.
9. Mae Haad Beach — Most Convenient
Mae Haad Beach sits right next to the pier — the first beach you’ll see when you step off the boat. Boats come and go, longtails line the shore, and the water is more scenic than swimmable. It’s not a destination beach, but for grabbing food, watching island life, and catching a west-facing sunset without travelling anywhere, it does the job well.
Coconut Monkey is a solid cafe-restaurant right on the beach — good food, great coffee, relaxed atmosphere. Breeze Restaurant is another good option nearby with a view worth lingering for. Mae Haad also connects to Sairee Beach if you walk north along the coast — two beaches in one walk.
Entry: Free
Getting there: Right at Mae Haad Pier — ~15 min by scooter from Wonderland
Watch out for: Boats everywhere. Better beaches exist for swimming — this one’s about convenience and food.
More Beaches Worth Knowing About
These didn’t make the ranked list of best beaches in Koh Tao, but they’re worth knowing if you’re spending more than a few days. Both are more remote — less convenient, fewer facilities, but quieter if that’s what you’re after. Hin Wong Bay is a snorkelling standout, and Mango Bay rewards anyone willing to work for it.

Hin Wong Bay — Coral Paradise
Hin Wong Bay has some of the most colourful coral on Koh Tao and is a favourite with underwater photographers. Clownfish, parrotfish, and dense reef formations close to shore. It’s more remote — bring your own gear and snacks, facilities are limited. Visit at low tide for the clearest view of the coral.
Getting there: Remote — scooter or boat from Wonderland. Limited facilities, bring supplies.
Mango Bay — Worth the Trip?
Mango Bay is a nice beach, uncrowded, and the water is good. The problem is getting there — the road is rough and only recommended if you’re confident on a motorbike. You can also walk (long) or take a taxi boat. Honestly, plenty of other best beaches in Koh Tao are just as good and much easier to reach. But if you like the adventure of getting somewhere remote, it’s a decent reward at the end.

Getting there: Rough road (experienced riders only), long walk, or taxi boat.
Frequently Asked Questions

Ao Leuk and Tanote Bay are the two best snorkelling beaches on Koh Tao. Ao Leuk has reef sharks in the sandy shallows and good coral on both sides. Tanote Bay has wider marine life variety — yellow box fish, stone monuments at depth, and coral starting within steps of the shore. For beginners, Ao Leuk is easier because the sandy centre lets you ease in without stepping on coral.
Despite the name, sharks are almost impossible to spot at Shark Bay. What you will see is turtles — green sea turtles that feed on the dead coral covering the bay floor. Swim out to where the depth reaches 5–6 metres for the best chance. The Oxygen Tours snorkel trip around 5pm is the easiest way to find them.
Chalok Beach is the closest — just five minutes on foot from Wonderland. It’s a calm, sandy bay with great sunset views and beachfront restaurants open into the evening. June Juea is also a short scooter ride south for a quieter option, and Banana Rock and Sai Thong Beach are nearby for a quick beachside lunch or drink.
Most beaches are free. The main exceptions: Shark Bay charges 500 THB through Haad Tien Beach Resort (the free path is increasingly restricted), Ao Leuk charges 100 THB on the right-side road (free if you take the left fork to the restaurant), and Freedom Beach charges 50 THB which includes access to Taa Toh Beach and John Suwan viewpoint.
Ao Leuk is safest for non-swimmers. The centre of the bay is pure sand with no coral to step on, the water is calm, and you can spot reef sharks from knee-deep water without needing to swim out. Tanote and Freedom Beach both have coral close to shore, so they need more water confidence.
Sairee Beach is the best sunset spot — the longest beach on the island, facing west, with fire shows most evenings. Chalok Beach is a close second if you want something quieter — south-facing, five minutes from Wonderland, and the sky goes orange over the hills. For elevated sunset views, check our Best Sunset Spots guide.
Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages coral), water shoes for rocky entries like Freedom Beach and Tanote, your own snorkelling gear if you plan to snorkel often, and a waterproof bag for your phone. For beaches like June Juea and Hin Wong Bay, bring food and water — facilities are limited.
Plan Your Koh Tao Beach Trip
Most of the best beaches in Koh Tao are 15–20 minutes from Wonderland by scooter — and Chalok Beach is five minutes on foot. Guests regularly hit Ao Leuk in the morning for reef sharks, Tanote in the afternoon for snorkelling, and Sairee at sunset for fire shows — all in one day. On Leo Beach Festival nights, the whole hostel does quiz night first, then heads to the beach together.
